Legacy

Jul. 9th, 2011 09:45 am
Watching the trailer for Legacy... I have mixed feelings. I *know* it won't be what I want it to be, and yet, I'll buy it.

I, for one, could give two shits about recycled areas. If I got more backstory (told in a clever, plotty way) about the characters, I wouldn't care if I had to take eight extra trips to the Wounded Coast... I'd be the first in line signing up for more kool-aid, please. Hell, I'd even take more backstory, period, without anything else.

Maybe this level of charcter development is typical in RP games. *weeps* Why would the PTB not exploit every tiny bit of emotional value from their product? Is that difficult to add more to the codex? Is it a matter of limited time, and the writers just run up against the deadline? I just don't get it.

I've been playing L.A. Noire a bit, and it's only added to my confusion. So far, it seems to be entirely story-based, with a function to allow the player to basically opt out of shooter/driving sequences. What gives? Why can't DA have fewer exploding Carta Thugs and just a bit more about *any* of the characters?

Sure, the potential of continuity snarl is compounded, but... I've already resigned myself to the magical time-machine theory for DA. (As opposed to actual, scientific time-machines, of course.)

Anyway. Legacy. July 26th. DD will be with a grandparent, DH will be out of town for work. I know where I'll be... right here, cursing Bioware, even as I hand over my ten bucks.

Burn Notice - Still haven't seen Thursday's episode. My relatives are good enough to DVR it for me, but getting to actually watch it is something else. I keep dancing around the idea of getting a satellite dish again... but, that's an added bill. Given I am anti-bills now, it's unlikely to happen.

Camelot. - Need to check if the first season is out yet. I came in mid-season and am interested enough I'd spring for these.

Farscape - ... yeah, um... ordered those DVDs. *sigh* The only copies I had of the episodes were those I'd taped on my VCR, and they most definitely did not survive one of the moves. (Do they even sell VCRs any more?) Will have to wait until Hubby leaves again for work, because he only tolerated the obsession the first time around, but... I see a long session of popcorn ahead.

The Walking Dead - Oh! I haven't been on AMC's site in a while. Looks like there's new info.

This is probably my very favorite in the entire fandom. If you like Zev, you need this story in your life. (Even if you don't like him, this is more than worth your time.)

Set in the Volutions series, which rocks as a whole, of course.

I don't think my clumsy words can describe exactly why this story is so amazing. Maybe because it hits all of my buttons so perfectly? Plot, characterization that fits my head-canon, consistency, character development... all with a nice heaping of unresolved sexual tension. What's not to like?

At the time of this post, the author is still hinting at Volutions'-related bits... so, if you fangirl like I do, there's likely more to come.

Gems like this are why I haunt the kmeme. Powerful story-telling that wrapped me up like it was a blanket.

The writer notes this is the un-beta'd version... hot damn, what will the final draft look like?

Reading fic, of course.

There's WIP fill on the DA Kmeme that's interesting. Very AU slave!Fenris stuff. Normally, slave fic is pretty self-indulgent, no matter how clean the writing is (not a bad thing, just sayin'). This isn't so far... so, linking... Avete Vos (M-rated, as if the whole kmeme locale wasn't clue enough).

I'm guessing from current Craigslist ads that hay will run $150/ton this year. There are some ads running for $125 in the field, but I'm too out of shape and fat for that bullshit.

Yep, this deserves it's own post. Given I have four full-size horses, three ponies, and 8-ish goats... hay prices are pretty important to me.

Plus, you know... it gives me something to bitch about, and I do so love bitching.

Something from the fill that refuses to be written. I'm shit-canning the entire works, starting with a slightly different idea.

Yes, the OP will be dead of old age before I get the actual fill done.

I'm currently obsessed with the idea of Anders' guilt over magic. And big, booming spells. I might recycle this scene later on. Waste not, no?

"He's a distraction, Justice? Really?"

Sarcasm is a contrivance of lesser men.

"Now that's funny."

The high dragon hadn't died easily. Anders felt the last of his own spells slip away as Isabela appeared next to him, sheathing her daggers. Fenris was pulling his greatsword from the ribs of a dragonling, wiping gore from the blade on the creature's scaly hide, swearing in Arcanum as though the beast had personally offended him.

And Garrett… he was still casting. He stood in the middle of the Bone Pit, staff and his empty hand upraised, magic pouring from each. Wind driven from a fire storm roared and lightening cracked around him, adding the smell of ozone to the reek of blood and brimstone as dust-devils snapped at his legs.

He shouted obscenities and laughed, face tilted to face the heavens, eyes pressed closed in something less innocent than simple joy. Over and over he sent waves of energy into an empty sky, spells crashing against one another in a display of raw power.

Anders felt Justice twitch, uttering a strained warning about the Veil, when Fenris shouted at Garrett.

"Hawke! Enough!" Fenris more than angry, he was livid. He pushed through the haze of dirt and ice, cursing. "Reckless, arrogant, plennus mage! You use your magic and tempt demons for your own entertainment?" His gauntleted hand bit into Garrett's arm and jerked the larger man around with surprising force.

Garrett's eyes snapped open. Instead of pulling away, he stepped forward, hands twining in Fenris' hair, forcing the elf's mouth to his. For a second, it seemed Fenris might resist, but then he let himself be drawn in, his body softening and molding against Garrett's.

Anders gave a small cough, Isabela cheered. Fenris pushed away with a curse, backing a few steps to wipe his lips with the back of his gauntlet. He looked as though he might say something, but turned abruptly to stomp towards the path that led back to the coast.

"So tell me, elf," Isabela called after him. She glanced over her shoulder at Garrett, the mage's face flushed and as smug as a cat that's been in the cream. "Is that what he looks like in bed? After he's done plundering your -"

Fenris snapped out words that sounded suspiciously like 'fuck off'. Garrett shot an unashamed grin at Anders, giving a small shrug of what-do-you-do? before fastening his staff at his back.

"You really don't have any shame over what you are, do you?"

Hawke didn't look at him, but Anders could see the change in his expression; not quite annoyed, but definitely not pleased, either. "Meaning what, exactly?"

"I mean…magic."

"You are?"

Was he? Justice's thoughts brushed against his own, twining. How often has he been bathed in the Chantry's litany as though he bears a sin so great even the words of Light cannot wash it away? How long could a lie be told before it became the truth? "I don't know."

"Suppose that's as good an answer as I'd give."

Not what he was expecting to hear. "Then, what was that… show back there?"

"That? Beyond the obvious fun?" Garrett's eyes narrowed on Fenris' back, the elf still marching stiffly ahead. "That was a good, old-fashioned mind-fuck. He's been an insufferable prick since we put down Hadriana."

He is worse than a distraction, he causes deliberate suffering of others, he is unj - Anders shut down the rant, uneasy, not sure if was completely Justice, not sure if he wanted to dig too deeply into that particular kettle.

"Right. I need to see an Antivian about a mine. See you at the Hanged Man?" Garrett didn't wait for Anders' answer, jogging ahead to match pace with Isabela.
