Memory Lane
Jul. 14th, 2011 09:21 amDespite the UPS website claiming my Farscape DVDs were undelivered, they were, in fact, at my brother's.
Complete and utter time-warp. Having not watched the episodes in so long, it's almost as though I'm watching them anew. As a super-duper-like-is-good kind of way, my daughter is old enough to watch now. And she loves it (no shock, the kid has good taste). So, we stayed up way too late last night, plowing through the first five eps, and a little of the commentary.
Once again, I'm blown away by how the series is, in episode five (Back and Back and Back to the Future) no less, pushing character and plot boundaries. First real glimpses of the way this brave new world is going to screw with John Crichton, and, more importantly, his reaction to it. I can't think of any series which has -consistently- done anything like this.
And then there's Aeryn. The bits of dialogue during Exodus from Genesis have long been what formed my head canon about this character. She tries so hard, and is so afraid of failure. Fic to the contrary, I've always seen her as a pretty average Peacekeeper. During heat delirium, she speaks of not passing the obstacle course (or is it being late?) and failing commando training, which exposes her fears/self-doubt. Given her later betrayal in a last-ditch attempt to gain further promotion, the viewer can assume she's not quite such a crackerjack PK if she's resorting to such measures. (Although, there is a counter argument for 'that's just how the PKs work, but I'm not buying that brand any more today than I was way back when.)
I think I mentioned I didn't buy the discs the first time around, yes? So, for the most part, I've not seen the commentary. I've especially not seen the Save Farscape portion. (That was a bit surreal, having met some of those fans.) I was recently looking for a friend's address and in digging through a box, came across the autographed badge... pretty damn humbling to have been a part of that, in whatever minor way.
Hopefully going to work on the DA2 WIP this coming week. Daughter is going to a reunion, hubby is out of town for work, so I should have some peace and quiet.
